For smaller domes that are up to 12 meters (40 feet) the Digistar SP2 HD system uses a high-resolution/high-brightness projector pair located in the center of the theater or in the theater's cove. The system displays an image with a fulldome resolution of 1,920 x 1,920 pixels, which is about 3 million unique pixels on the dome or 2,560 x 2,560 pixels with about 8.2 million unique pixels on the dome. The center-mounted Digistar SP2 HD system has been designed to integrate with a center-mounted opto-mechanical star projector.

Multiple Projectors

Most video projectors have lower resolution than a dome requires, so to increase the number of Pixels on the Dome, multiple projectors combine together to create higher resolution. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this technique.

The greatest advantages include increased total brightness on the dome and increased total pixels. The greatest disadvantages include the need to achieve and maintain precise alignment between projectors and the need to have video from multiple projectors overlapping in "blend" regions that join the entire image together. The more projectors in the system the more challenging it is to maintain a unified image, and the more the blend regions around the dome become apparent. E&S has developed tools and procedures to make this alignment as easy as possible, and maintaining this alignment takes only about one hour per week.
